Jazz Pick Roundup
Jazz picks are, in my opinion, the best kept secret of (non-jazz) guitar players. Even before knowing that you can buy a small pointed pick in the store (my local store didn’t have anything but standard picks), I’d get a regular tortex or gator pick and sand down sides to get a pointed tip. Realizing that you can buy them was great news for me 🙂 I’ve used various Jazz III variations over the years, but recently I started getting more into acoustic guitars which are much less forgiving when it comes to pick choice. Any noise generated on contact between the string and the pick will be clearly heard. Tonal characteristics of the pick will come through much clearer on acoustic guitar. So I set on a quest to find the pointed pick that will work well with my new fleet of acoustic guitars and, hopefully, equally as well with my electrics.
Method
In order to separate my personal opinion from “scientific” facts, I came up with about a dozen atomic criterion, or aspects if you will, that are observed for each pick. Each criteria is small and simple enough that makes it possible to tell between the two picks how they compare. For example, it’s relatively easy to tell which pick is stiffer, or louder. By comparing each criteria individually, I can sort all picks and assign them numerical grades between 1 and 10.
In my experience, the good old red Jazz III is a very nice pick that is not extreme in anything – not too pointy, not too bright, not too fast, not too warm. So I used it as a reference when doing the first round of comparisons. It’s not practical to compare every pick against every other pick, so doing the preliminary comparison against Jazz III gives me a ballpark idea where the pick will be on the scale. After that, I take all other picks that are in the same range, compare against them and find it’s place. I would do that for every individual criterion separately.
Now comes the fun part – in order to determine the total grade of the pick, each criteria is assigned with an importance factor, determined by position of sliders below. That means that criteria that are more important to you will have bigger impact on the final grade. Some of the criteria behave slightly differently than others. For example, giving lower importance to “Grip” means just that you don’t care if it grips good or not. However, if you set the “Warm/Bright” slider closer to “Warm”, the system will interpret that as “you prefer warmer pick”, not as “you don’t care if the pick is bright”. These two are very different and will affect the final grade differently.
By default, sliders are set to my personal preference, but you are welcome to play with them and set them to yours. Grades will be recalculated and picks will be sorted accordingly.
Please note though, that these grades are only rough guidelines as precision scientific equipment was not used to determine individual grades. Grades do not guarantee that pick A will be a better or worse choice for you than pick B. I try hard to give unbiased grades, but they are still my personal opinion. Your ears and hands and perception may be different. Even I will choose a pick differently based on what I’m playing at that time.
I always try to give each pick as much play time as possible to make the comparison fair, and I suggest everyone to do the same. When you’re used to something, good or bad, whatever you try that is very different than that will feel odd at first. Give it some time before making the final verdict.
Finally, many of the models reviewed come in different thicknesses. I would usually choose one thickness I like and review that. Thinner picks will typically be a bit brighter, more flexible and sometimes if they are flexible enough, they could add the clapping/flapping noise. Thicker will be the opposite.
Mods
As I’m a fairly light picker, I prefer nimble and bright sounding picks that do not require me to dig in hard to get a nice clear sound of my guitar. Whenever I test a pick and feel that there’s a room for improvement in either of the two areas, I would try to modify the pick to have slightly more pointed tip and sharper edges. My reference is Gravity Sunrise that I like very much, so I would usually try to make the other pick have the same tip and bevel like the Sunrise. That assumes a fairly pointed tip and V-shaped bevels that are pretty sharp. For most materials, it’s pretty straight forward to do using nothing but some sand-paper – #220 for getting the shape and bevel right and super-fine (don’t know the grade) sandpaper or nail files for final polishing. It takes not more than 5 minutes to Sunrise-ize an ordinary Jazz-style pick. Whenever you see “(Modded)” attached to a pick’s name, that is what the mod is. In all those cases I would deduce one point from the “Price” grade because it takes some time to do, so it affects the total “cost” of the pick. And of course, I’ll always try to review the unmodified pick as well.

This is a fancy version of the original acrylic Sunrise that grew into being my favorite pick shape. When the new Gold series came out I had to try the Gold version. Basic pick shape is unchanged but it looks like the tip is slightly differently beveled. Definitely more effort is put into making this pick.

Similar in shape to Jazz III but even smaller and slightly more pointed. That makes it very nimble while still being comfortable to hold. It sounds slightly brighter compared to other Gravity picks of the same thickness I’ve tried and compared to pretty much any Jazz III. That is due to the sharp tip that catches on the string and releases a lot of energy abruptly. Which also means that it’s not a super-fast pick as the tip doesn’t slip from the string too fast.

more
These Wegens have the same size and shape like Jazz III, but are 2.0mm thick and feature very different edges than most other picks. Bevel is asymmetrical, a.k.a. “speed bevel” which allows for fast picking and smooth string release. Obviously, this also means that a pick can be left or right handed, as bevel can be done on one side or the other. Tone they produce is warm and rich with no picking noise at all. I think they are best suited for bright instruments or where style calls for warmer tone. They are made of self-lubricating plastic which further helps with the speed but also makes the pick more durable because there’s less friction with strings. One of the best features for me is the way gripping surface is done. Instead of embossed letters or shapes that most manufacturers use, these have carved out surface on each side, and patterns on each side are rotated 90 degrees relative to each other. The means that pick will stay put even when gripped lightly, and also it is more pleasant to hold than gripping surfaces with emboss. Other than price, there’s no reason not to give these a try if you’re into small, stiff picks.

Has the same shape and thickness as the regular Jazz III but made from ultex which makes it much stiffer. As the result, the tone is slightly more brighter and punchier. Very clear, piano like tone that I like very much. It’s not slippery but I don’t find it very pleasant to hold because of the raised letters. Other than that, I love these. Finish is better than tortex or nylon Dunlops, there are no rough edges or mold lines. One minor thing to note – it’s transparent yellowish in color which makes them impossible to find when dropped on the wooden floor.

These are very interesting picks, tips made of harder delrin and gripping surface made of rubber. The result is a thick jazz pick with pointed tip which is also very flexible, more so than that 0.68mm thick Tusq pick. The shape is similar to Jazz III, sized between regular Jazz III and Petrucci model. Tip is pointed, for a har more than Dunlop Jazz III and edges are just a bit less beveled. Being a thick flexible pick makes it unique and versatile. When gripped closer to the tip it’s stiffer and more controllable. When gripped further from the tip, there’s more room for flexing and becomes more like a thin, flexible pick which is very good for strumming. They sound great, very loud and clear. All the good sides of a thin, flexible pick, without the annoying clapping noise that is usually associated with thin picks. Grip is amazing without sacrificing comfort (I’m looking at you, max grip!). Except for metal rhythm playing when I need the pick to be rock stiff, I like using these for everything else. And they are cheap. Definitely worth trying.

By modding the pick I wanted to reduce grittiness and add some smoothness to the tone, so I sanded the tip a little shorter and gave it smoother V bevel using a nail file. It instantly improved the pick in my book. It became less scratchy than Gravity Sunrise while sounding about the same – bright and punchy. And because the tip was so sharp and pointy, even after taking some of it off, it’s still a very precise, very pointed pick. And making the tip smoother improved the speed as there’s less friction between the pick and the strings.

In this particular case, I did the mod hoping to tame the harsh highs I was getting on the acoustic. Having a nice polished bevel helped tremendously and made it a more balanced sounding pick. Beveled edges also improved speed as they don’t “catch” the string like unfinished edges do.

Very unique pick, shaped similar to Jazz III but with wider “shoulders”. Sits in the hand nicely and feels very comfortable. Grip holes help both with the grip, but also make it feel nice. Although it’s metal, it’s finished properly, so it doesn’t scratch or feel awkward. Tone is balanced and loud with just a hint of metallic brightness. It should last very long, but aluminum is probably softer than strings, so expect some wear.

“Boutique” version of one of my favorite picks of all time – Jazz III Ultex. Made of the same material but dyed darker amber. The basic shape of the pick is unchanged, but the tip is hand beveled with a slight speed-bevel. To me it looks almost the same as the regular Jazz III ultex tip looks after few months of use. It glides off the string faster because of that and produces just a tad warmer tone than the original Jazz III Ultex. Gripping surface is very different and feels nicer but doesn’t seem to grip as well.

I was initially skeptical about wooden picks, but this pick surprised me. It’s a very balanced, natural sounding pick without any excessive or subdued frequencies. It’s very well made and polished to glass-like surface. Surprisingly, although perfectly flat, they stick to fingers better than any synthetic material of the same shape. Lignum vitae wood naturally sticks to fingers very well. As I hoped, there’s no picking noise, scratching or clicking. Finally, they look great, especially in combination with acoustic guitars or natural finished electric guitars. One concern that still remains is longevity of wooden picks, no matter how hard the wood is. After a few days of playing with the pick, I noticed tip shape changed color very slightly indicating minor wear, but enough to be seen by naked eye.

I modded the pick to have a more pointed tip, as stock version was way too dull and imprecise for my test. Being celluloid, it’s very soft and super easy to sand through, so it takes just few strokes with sandpaper to change the shape. That also means that it won’t last as long as ultex or tusq, but celluloid has a nice feel and tone that makes it worth it. With the mod it’s got some clarity, so it’s very rich sounding pick and allows you to dig in more without getting too loud. #330 grew from being unusable to me to being one of my favorite picks after the mod is done.

These have similar tip shape like Jazz III, but unlike the original, there are three tips, which is beneficial in many ways. Three tips means three times longer life. Also, they are wider than normal one-tipped pick, so there’s more contact with fingers and more grip. And finally, you don’t have worry how you hold your pick, any tip will do.
They are not super pointed, but bevel has a sharp edge that initially sounds very bright but after few days breaks in and sounds very nice, punchy but rich. less

2.0mm ultex features the same Jazz III contours but are slightly thicker, made of ultex (obviously) and have different edge bevel, or no bevel at all. They sound a bit more aggressive and scratchy than other Jazz III pick I’ve tried. I like them quite a bit for heavier stuff on electrics, but find them too bright and shrill sounding for brighter acoustic. They could bring a dull sounding acoustic to life, or even make older string sound like new (not kidding). They are more comfortable to hold than most other Jazz III picks because letters are very thin and just slightly raised. They help with the grip without being annoying. Also, unlike other Jazz III models, it seems to have slightly arched top and back, so even though it’s noticeably thicker, it doesn’t feel that way. For example, Gravity Sunrise 2.0mm I have feels much thicker and cumbersome.

I didn’t expect much from these as they are dirt cheap and look like a knockoff of Jazz III Carbon, but with glass fibers added instead of carbon for strength and tone. But they have immediately proved me wrong as they sound incredible. Very similar to Jazz III Ultex, clear and loud. Not muddy like nylon picks at all. They are a tad larger than Jazz III, but not as large as Jazz III XL which is too big for me. So these may be the answer for people who would like a smaller pick but find Jazz III to be too small. One thing I don’t like is the way gripping surface is done. It has “spikes” similar to dunlop those on max grip, arranged around the logo in the middle. It grips well but is not particularly pleasant to hold.

Petrucci signature picks have the same shape but are noticeably larger than Jazz III. They are made from ultex and are 1.5mm thick. Obviously, they are great for Petrucci style of playing, they are plenty loud, precise and stiff. Round, smooth beveled edges make the string slip fast, so they are good for fast rhythm and soloing. I find them to be great for electrics and for brighter acoustics, but not so great for darker guitars, dreadnoughts, and similar.

I modded the pick to have tip and bevel shape similar to Gravity Sunshine hoping to add some brightness and precision. The mod definitely helped with precision, the pick is very nimble now. But surprisingly, it didn’t bring out highs as it was doing on other picks. Highs actually got a bit quieter. Also, the picking noise, that typically gets worse as you sharpen the tip, noticeably improved here. I assume that both these “anomalies” are product of self lubricated material. With a very pointed tip it’s even easier for a string to slip off the tip, so it doesn’t “catch” like with some other pointed picks. It’s still a great sounding pick, the sound is full and rich, but not very brilliant in highs. Tusq material is nice to work with and doesn’t sand away too fast, so it’s very easy to DIY your own version using nothing but few different grades of sandpaper.

Very different than anything else. Similar outline like Jazz III but slightly longer and more pointy. These are made tapered, 3mm thick at the top that is reduced to razor thin at the tip. PEEK 1000 material resembles bone, both in feel and hardness. Tip is very sharp and stiff, so it’s very precise pick. The material does not feel self-lubricated, so there’s a lot of contact with the string which results in sharp and punchy tone with a lot of grit. May be useful on distorted electric, but it manifest as loud scratchy noise on acoustic. Tapered design feels awkward at first but once you get used to it, it’s nice, the way it gets thinner towards the tip focuses your grip toward the tip. Very interesting and unique pick, worth trying.

Slightly smaller than Jazz III, and roughly the size of Gravity Sunrise, these look and feel even smaller because of the way they are made. The pick itself is 1.5mm thick, but gripping foam adds about as much to the thickness. It’s a very different way of getting grip, using an actual sticky surface instead of friction. As expected, they grip like crazy, they stick to fingers or any object that comes in contact with the sticky foam. It takes some time to get used to the soft foam feel and stickiness because it’s very different than anything else. Tonally, they are balanced and clear sounding with decent amount of volume.

more
This is probably the most pointed jazz pick Dunlop makes. Tip is very sharp but also very thin, so it is really reduced to a single point. That makes it super precise and super fast pick, but at the expense of tone. Because it’s so fast, there’s no enough time for energy to be put into string movement, so it is quieter and shallower sounding than most other picks. It’s 2mm thick in the middle but much thinner toward edges, so it has like a belly, which makes it feel a bit awkward. Usually, picks feature dimples to make them grip and feel better, but this is exactly the opposite of that. Apparently, it’s a popular pick, I assume because it gives an impression of instant improvement of technique, but I find trade-off in tone not worth the extra speed.

Similar in shape to Jazz III but even smaller and slightly more pointed. That makes it super precise while still being relatively comfortable to hold. It’s probably the most nimble pick I’ve ever tried, cuts like a razor. The tip is very sharp and edges are unpolished which makes it very bright. At moments it can get scratchy on an acoustic which can be somewhat mitigated by adjusting your picking technique.

Almost identical to the original Jazz III with two subtle differences. First, it’s slightly softer which makes it flex more. Second, instead of bold letters, it features thin letters that are much more pleasant to hold and still grip well. Although it’s slightly warmer than Jazz III on single notes, being more flexible adds some complexity to the tone.

These come from the JD Jazztones line that targets primarily jazz players. They resemble Jazz III shape, but are a bit narrower. Bevels are very smooth, resulting in very smooth and fast release. Tonally, it also means that it will sound a bit darker and less loud. On wound strings it sounds a bit brighter than standard red Jazz III, but on plain strings it’s a bit warmer – very interesting. They don’t have pretty much anything added to increase grip, such as embossed letters, holes, etc, but material itself sticks to fingers pretty good and feels nice to hold – smooth and velvety. They feel a bit narrower than I’d like, so to me that takes away some comfort. They are interesting picks, at 40 cents a pop, they are definitely worth trying, especially for a brighter guitar (or if you need jazzier tone).

Similar shape and tip like Dunlop Jazz III, but made out of Tusq (synthetic ivory). They are very stiff, even slightly stiffer than Ultex. The material is slippery, so the pick will slip off the string very fast. They are slightly brighter sounding than Jazz III but not too much. The tip is not very pointed, so it’s not as bright and punchy like Gravity Sunrise for example. Tone is balanced with a hint of high frequency brilliance added that I haven’t heard on most other picks, probably due to Tusq material.

The material they are made of feels very different than anything else I’ve tried, very silky under fingers. Tonally it resembles nylon, but is not as flexible. The pick is stiff for the most part, expect the very tip which is the thinnest part of the pick. Softer material results in warmer tone with less overtones and more fundamental frequencies, so it’s not as harmonically rich as the sandstorm model. Because it’s more slippery, there’s no contact noise and it also feels faster. Tapered design feels awkward at first but once you get used to it, it’s nice, the way it gets thinner towards the tip focuses your grip toward the tip. Very interesting and unique pick, worth trying.

They share the same as Gravity Striker which is pretty much Jazz III times 3. But they feature a different bevel than the striker, more rounded and less sharp. That, and the added thickness makes it warm sounding, but still precise. And it looks great. less

Deep version of the small teardrop is made out of completely different material that doesn’t resemble any Tusq pick, saddle or nut I have. It also sounds quite different when dropped on the desk. More like plastic and less like super-bright Tusq. It’s not as slippery as bright or warm models, so string release is not as fast, which to me is a good thing, as it gives a bit more control. The red Jazz III is a classic. It’s one of the first picks people try when they start playing with smaller, pointed picks. It’s softer than black (stiffo) version and flexes more, so the sound is warm. Edges are slightly beveled, so release is smooth. They are decent introductory picks and will work well on both electric and acoustic. Not brilliant in any way, but cheap and readily available in pretty much any store. Max grip version I tested is essentially the same, with a different gripping surface that grips like mad but is rather unpleasant to hold.

Other than size, they are very similar to Jazz III. One thing I don’t like is the way gripping surface is done. It has “spikes” similar to dunlop those on max grip, arranged around the logo in the middle. It grips well but is not particularly pleasant to hold.

This pick resembles the shape of Richie Blackmore’s tortoise pointed square pick I’ve always wanted to try. However, it’s very warm sounding and lacks precision compared to my other pointed picks. The tip is a bit strange cut at 90 degree angle much less pointed than most other “pointed” picks. Being made of celluloid, it feels and sounds differently than most other pointed picks and in a way it’s nice. Engraved lettering provides great grip while still being very comfortable to hold. It’s a decent introductory pick into smaller pick world for folks used to not so pointed picks. For me it was way too different than anything I’m used to, so I modded it to suit my style.

I got these in thicknesses 0.8mm and 1mm as an experiment and to me they are just dreadful. Dunlop seems to punch them out from a sheet of ultex and just sell them like that. No bevel, no tidying up the rough edges, nothing. As the result they sound very scratchy. I tried beveling edges on one of them using some fine sandpaper and I was able to get rid of some scratchiness, but the sound is still thin. Also, they seem to slip out of the hand easier than other Dunlops and feel very awkward. I would not recommend these, but they are cheap, so if you feel like experimenting, give them a go.

Wow, this is quite the exhaustive list. I’ve recently become a big fan of the red Jazz III’s and found your page here because i was looking for a way to lose some of the scraping harsh tones that sometimes creep in (depending on how I’m playing and what settings I’m using). I think I’ll mod mine with fine steel wool to remove the seam that comes from the molding process, and see what I end up with. Thank you!
Hello. Thank you for your article. Can you talk about other materials for making pick like horns and bone and wood explaining that?
Hi… Very good site.
I’m a huge Black Stiffo Jazz III addict. but since several years, Jim Dunlop has changed their Black Stiffo material, before this change, they were a lot stiffer, and had a “mate” finish, they have changed for a shiny finish and are a lot less stiff… so the sound and feel has changed, I’ve always got about 60 old Jazz III, and trust me, they were a much more fantastic pick, tone wise and feel wise.
Too bad Dunlop has done this, hope one day they will reissue the old Jazz III Black Stiffo, hope this will be before my 60 ones are used 😉
I suggest trying Dunlop Jazz III Ultex 2.0mm or Chickenpicks Badazz III. They are both super stiff.
Cheers
Hey,
Great page (and website)! I’m also a fan of gravity’s 1.5mm sunrise mini (and their 1.5mm tripp mini), so it looks like we’re coming from a similar place. Having your reviews in mind I went out and tried more J3 type picks, with the thought of modding them to get results closer to what I want.
One particular pick that stood out to me was the Dunlop Petrucci. Have you tried modding it for a shorter length? From my limited experiments so far that might be enough to make it a contender for the standard (yellow) ultex J3.
More generally, I’d be curious to hear your take on the importance of pick length. (Besides the tip, I’m starting to wonder how much of what I like about the Gravity mini Snr comes from its shorter length.)
I agree that matching pick length to your style and hands is important. Regular Petrucci pick is a bit too long for me, but I haven’t tried modding it yet. Ultex 2mm is similar but smaller.
Cheers
Hi, I wonder whether you wouldn’t mind telling me where you obtained the materials for your DIY plectrum designs? I live in Spain and am trying out different materials. It is not easy finding them here, so I have had to import materials, which is a PITA. Thanks
I bought it from ebay. You can find some online stores in US or UK that sell vespel but it’s incredibly expensive. You can find cheaper vespel scraps that are sufficient for few picks but it takes time and effort. They do pop out every now and then.
Hi,
Thanks a lot for the article, I am kind of always in the search for a new pick and really love the jazz-style ones.
Have you encountered the phenomenon that new picks have some excess material around the edges, which really affects the sound and the way the pick glides off the strings? Do you have a tip on how to get rid of it?
Cheers and thanks for the great site 🙂
Yes, that often happens with picks that are molded, rather than carved out of a solid block of material. I hate it too, it makes the sound brittle, especially on acoustics and impedes your ability to pick effortlessly. The way I usually deal with it is to polish the bevel carefully using a fine nail file or very fine sandpaper. If you give it a week or so, it will probably break in by itself, but it is annoying.
Thanks for your comment and kind words.
For me, Black ice 1.5mm are well finish. Tumble process make them more round edge and very smooth and stiff. Not scratchy at all and no click\flap soud. Oversized jazz type make them more stable to hold without ”tractor grip”. Nothing to compared with Pich black Dunlop (I have 0.5 to 1.14mm). They are more unfinished, scratchy and difficult to hold (flying, flappy, cheap sensation).
Thanks.
Very interesting article! Ive tries almost al those pics and i think your comments are very accurate. Cheers!
Hi, are you making the Bancika pointy dream for sale ? How can I buy one ? Thanks a lot, Ralph
Hi, unfortunately, no. It’s more of a passion project for me. Takes a lot of time and effort to make each of them. They’d have to cost a fortune to make it worth doing 🙂 We built 5 of them and I hope they’d last a decade.
I’d recommend trying gravity gold pick. It’s pretty similar, only maybe a tad brighter.
Cheers
